Driving in hot weather will not only bring a great test to the body of the truck drivers, but also a big test to the truck. Summer is the season of high incidence of truck failures. Trucks running outside all year round are prone to excessive engine water temperature under high temperature.
 
Under normal circumstances, the water temperature of the engine should be between 80°C and 90°C. If the water temperature is often higher than 95°C, it’s overheating. So, what are the reasons that cause the water temperature of the engine to be too high? How do we deal with these problems in our daily operations?
 
● Four reasons why the truck is overheating
 
Reason 1: Insufficient coolant
 
The heat of the engine is dissipated through the circulation of the coolant, and the heat taken away will naturally reduce because of insufficient coolant . If you check the coolant and find that the coolant level in the water tank is lower than the minimum mark, it means that the coolant is missing.
 
How to deal with insufficient coolant?
 
1. Check whether there is water leakage outside the cooling system. If there is water leakage, repair the leaking position first;
 
2. If there is no water leakage, add coolant to the specified scale. When adding coolant, be careful not to open the water tank cover immediately after stopping the truck. At this time, the water temperature in the water tank is very high and the pressure is also very high. Immediately opening it may cause high-temperature steam to spray out and burn us. It is recommended to wait for a while before opening it. In order to prevent the water vapor from scalding the arm, it is best to put a towel when opening the lid of the water tank.
 
Reason 2: Thermostat failure
 
The main function of the thermostat is to adjust the cooling intensity of the cooling system. It is prone to failure or functional decline after long-term use, resulting in slow or even interrupted water circulation.
 
When the temperature of the engine is low, the thermostat will close the large water circuit circulation and connect the small water circuit circulation to reduce heat loss and increase the temperature of the engine rapidly. After the temperature of the engine rises to a certain degree, the thermostat will turn on the large water circuit circulation and close the small water circuit circulation. After the thermostat fails, the large water circuit circulation cannot be connected, which will cause poor heat dissipation.
 
How to deal with thermostat failure?
 
Remove the thermostat and put it in the hot water:
 
1. When the water temperature rises to about 70°C, the main valve of the thermostat should start to open;
 
2. When the water temperature reaches 80-86°C, the thermostat valves should be fully opened, and the valve height should generally not be less than 9mm.
 
If the above requirements are not met, the thermostat needs to be repaired or replaced.
 
Reason 3: Too much scale in the cooling system
 
When the water tank is not cleaned for a long time or the regular antifreeze is not used, the cylinder block and radiator are prone to accumulate thick scale. Due to the poor thermal conductivity of the scale, it will block the water tank and cause poor heat dissipation. Therefore, the water tank needs to be cleaned regularly, and attention should be paid to the use of regular antifreeze.
 
How to deal with too much scale in cooling system?
 
Chemically clean the cylinder block and radiator with chemical cleaning fluid, and replace the water tank if necessary. During the cleaning process, the thermostat should be taken out. After the cleaning fluid is released, all the drain switches need to be removed to remove the dirt, and then the water jacket and radiator of the engine should be rinsed with clean water.
 
Reason 4: The radiator is covered by foreign objects
 
After the radiator is covered with sludge, leaves and other debris, the air intake and heat exchange will greatly reduce, resulting in excessive water temperature. In the season when poplar catkins are flying, a lot of poplar catkins will adhere to the heat sink, and the heat dissipation will be affected after the heat sink is covered with a layer of "quilt".
 
How to deal with the radiator covered by foreign matter?
 
1. After the engine is turned off, blow with compressed air from the rear of the radiator, or flush with low-pressure water. The reason why it cannot be flushed with a high-pressure water gun is that it will cause damage to the radiator;
 
2. After removing the debris, clean the core with a soft brush.
 
● What should we do when the water tank is overheating?
 
After the water tank is overheated, if you are driving at high speed, you cannot stop to turn off the flame immediately. Instead, you should pull over to the side to stop and run at an idling speed for a while before turning off the flame, and open the engine cover to allow the engine to dissipate heat.
 
Why can't we stop and turn off the engine immediately? Because the engine is operating at a high speed when the water tank is overheated, a large amount of heat generated by the engine also needs residual cooling water to dissipate the heat. If the engine stops running, the cooling system will not work, and the high temperature will cause deformation and damage to the engine components.
